What is TSTV?

Texas StudentTelevision is the place on campus where you can learn how to use cameras, learn how to edit, and become a producer/director.

You can make your own programs, and program them on Access TV. If they are really good they can be programmed on broadcast TV. We also accept programming from anyone as we are committed to our community and the only community broadcast outlet in Austin. Call 512-471-3190 to submit programming or fill out the form below.

We are also a broadcast station on KVR Channel 9.

We have several departments which you may participate in. These are News, Production, Administration, Programming, and Advertising. We began testing our signal Wednesday January 11th, 1995 and began as a fully functional station February 3rd.

If you are interested in working at TSTV come down to the basement at the back of Hogg Auditorium and pick up an application, fill it out and return it to us.

Our primetime schedule on our broadcast feed is prioritized for student productions. Currently, most our shows are on Friday nights. The news department shall also do daily news updates and a bi-weekly news program Tuesdays at 9 PM.

We also are currently broadcast on Austin CableVision on Channel 10, Monday through Thursday from 11 PM to 12 AM and on Saturday from 5 PM to 7 PM. The broadcast station broadcasts 24 hours a day and also is carried on The University Cable throughout the Dormitoroes via the cable Channel 15.

Our broadcast schedule has Music Video, Student Programs, and Student, City Governmental and Public Affairs Programming. So you can figure daytime - music or government, primetime - student, nightime - music.

We carry MuchMusic, an alternative music network and the Austin Music Network as well as our own Music programs. Austin Music is on 10 PM-2AM Sunday through Thursday and 10 PM-4AM Friday and Saturdays. Austin Music Network will begin broadcasting at 8:00 PM January 3rd, 1996 and we may carry some of their early programming, but we have a priority to student produced programming. Also, in January we plan on showing uncut films, without commercials, another first in Austin broadcast history. We hope to carry some TEX-PAN a Public Affairs programming in 1997. We also host public issue focused shows from our studios. On Wednesday nights we will program the City Interactive Call-In Shows, and on Thursday afternoons - the Austin City Council Meetings. The rest of Prime Time we program Student produced programming.

HISTORY

In April 1994, President Berdahl gave the management of the University's KVR Channel 9 Community TV to TSTV. The coverage area of KVR-TV is north of the Colorado river. It covers East Austin, West Campus, North and Central Austin. The tower is located on top of the UT Main Bulding Tower. You will need rabbit ears to pick us up if you live closer to campus and an outdoor antenna if you live further away from campus. If you live south or west you will probably be out of luck until the City Council recommends that we be on Austin Cablevision. This should all happen soon.

Texas Student Television began in 1987 with the goal to provide all students in the Austin, Texas area a voice in television. One goal was to have the student dormitories wired with cable. Also, TSTV wanted to provide students (faculty and staff) a television production facility, wherein anyone could produce whatever they wanted without censorship, and submit it for programming.

Originally, the Students' Association established the Student Media Agency. Texas Student Television applied for and was allocated an access channel by the Austin Cable Commission on September 28, 1989.

TSTV was originally under the auspices of the SA and was housed in the University Services Building. TSTV subsequently moved to the basement of Hogg Memorial Auditorium. Soon after this TSTV became part of Texas Student (Media) Publications which has the Daily Texan_, Cactus Yearbook_ and KVRX student radio.

On December 7, 1990, TSTV was provisionally accepted as a media unit of Texas Student Publications pending an agreement formally specifying its obligations with regard to an access channel.

Soon after the aquisition of used television equipent from various donors, TSTV went to the City and asked for a Public, Educational, and Governmental Public Access Channel on Austin Cablevision as part of the franchise agreement with the City. The City Cable Commission granted TSTV to be an access manager and recomended to the City Council that TSTV be allotted a channel. Austin Cablevision turned on channel 54 as Texas Student Television for about a month with a Character Generated screen. TSTV went forth and purchased equipment to begin programming on channel 54 but Austin Cablevision decided to program pay-per-view on 54.

The City Council in early 1991 requested ACTV to give TSTV programming space rather than give a dedicated channel to TSTV. They recommeded that TSTV come back to the City Council at a future date to request a full time.

TSTV continues its endevour to gain a channel on Austin CableVision. The City Council has recently given a channel to the Austin Music Network, which the City now plans to also run part time as a City shared use channel. Meanwhile, TSTV programs its showcase on channel 10 Monday through Thursday at 11:00 PM and on Saturdays from 5-7 PM. Also, KVR-TV is on the air on channel 9 -24 hours a day, on KVR-InterneTV 24 hours a day, and on Campus via the dormitory cable system. KVR/TSTV also has over five regularly produced series currently in production. We will continue the fight for our channel on Austin CableVision. If you want this too call Austin CableVision at 1-800-418-8848 and tell them you want us on Cable.

All you have to be is a student, faculty or staff at the University of Texas at Austin to work at TSTV and we welcome students from other schools as well such as Concordia, ACC, St. Edwards and Huston-Tillotson. UT students, staff and faculty will need to take training course at a minimal cost to use our equipment and we will work with other schools to assist them in their needs. The classes are held every week.

Classes are as follows:

  • Camera: $25.00
  • Basic Editing: $40.00
  • A/B Roll Edit: $40.00
  • Studio $40.00
  • Master Control: $25.00

  • Classes are usually Monday, Wednesdays, or Thursday nights 6-10 PM
